Stop Pestering His Grace!!!!

Stop Pestering His Grace!!!!

For many fans of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, the wait between books is almost unbearable.  Readers have become so invested in the story that the wait between books seems like forever. As a faithful book reader, I empathize. I too am waiting for the next book, The Winds of Winter. But instead of waiting patiently for the next book, many readers are COMPLAINING about how long it has taken His Grace to publish TWOW.  This is unacceptable.

Per his Grace, A Song of Ice and Fire began in 1991. The first installment,  A Game of Thrones was finished in late 1994 and eventually published in 1996. A Clash of Kings was published in 1998 followed by A Storm of Swords in 2000, A Feast for Crows in 2005 and A Dance with Dragons in 2011. Have you noticed a pattern?  As the books become longer, it takes more time to write them!!! Now I know that the majority of readers are spoiled. Readers demand instant gratification. But GRRM isn’t James Patterson. He doesn’t employ ghostwriters that enable him to crank out 5 crappy books a year like Patterson does. For people complaining about The World of Ice and Fire coming out October 2014, this is mostly based on writings he had already done but did not include in previous books.

The books in the ASOIAF series are so layered and so detailed that in an interview with the Wall Street Journal GRRM said “The books are very complex and I spend a lot of time trying to get that right”.  This proves how much he cares. He is trying to do his due diligence  to both the character about which he is writing AND the reader that is so invested in said character.  It makes me so AAANGRY when I see people on social media say His Grace doesn’t care about the reader. Really? Really?  This man has dedicated over 2 decades to this series. CLEARLY HE CARES. He isn’t rushing through to please anyone. To do so cheapens the story and do you really want that? In a recent interview with The Guardian Martin said, “If the novels are still being read in 50 years, no one is ever going to say: ‘What’s great about that sixth book is that he met his deadline!’ It will be about how the whole thing stands up.” EXACTLY.

For those of you who are impatient for The Winds of Winter I have some suggestions:

READ THE BOOKS AGAIN. I guarantee you there will be things you didn’t notice the first time. Don’t lie & say you picked up on all the hidden clues like R+L=J or the Harry Potter reference the first time.

Check out Reddit. There are literally THOUSANDS of fan theories for you to read.  It will take forever to read them all. Some are fantastic.  Some are crap, either way it will satisfy your need for more ASOIAF material.

GRRM has other short stories and novellas that are worth reading. Have you read Fevre Dream? Its amazing.

What this ultimately comes down to is His Grace is taking his time writing the books. And while the thought of him not completing the books is horrifying,  let’s all remember this: HE DOESN’T OWE US ANYTHING.  Stop bothering him. Stop whipping out your phone to take a selfie because it annoys His Grace “Oh, and ‘selfies’! If I could clap my hands and burn out every camera phone in the world, I swear I’d do it!” Stop posting nasty comments about his weight, health and age. Stop acting like entitled brats. The books will come when they come! His Grace says it best “I can only write one word at a time, one sentence at a time, one book at a time.”
