As the van made it’s way down the slushy road, Detroit called the Professor again. They had not heard from her for almost 48 hours, which was very strange. She was the one who had suggested they carry out their plans this weekend since the studio would be lightly guarded. “Well?” Shengqi asked, his eyes never leaving the road. “Straight to voicemail,” Detroit replied. “Maybe she lost her phone? Or she didn’t want anyone to track her? I bet that’s it.” Shellron suggested. Shellron was always the voice of reason. “Eh, she probably chickened out is what I think,” Little Bird added. Little Bird had a reputation for unabashed honesty. “I don’t know, but it doesn’t matter now,” Shengqi remarked sternly. “The plan is moving forward and we have to remember our goal.” Shengqi slowed the van to a crawl and pulled up across the street from bookburner headquarters. HBO Studios, NYC.
Detroit thought back to everything he had learned at MIT. And then his military training. He was the best. He knew it and so did everyone else. Shengqi has recruited him to help with this task. He could crack any computer code and he felt pretty confident that this job would be easy compared to his tours overseas. Shellron and Little Bird were chatting softly about some Sansan meta in the back while Shellron braided Little Birds long coppery hair. He looked over at Shengqi and they exchanged smirks. These girls were always carrying on about Sansan. They were dressed to kill in black leather jumpsuits, black gloves and hats. He wasn’t sure at first about Shengqi’s choice to bring the two ladies in with him, but he knew that he was needed in the van. Detroit looked over his friends for what he hoped would not be the last time as they were adjusting their backpacks and checking weapons. He felt confident that Shengqi would keep them safe, there wasn’t a man alive more skilled in arms than Shengqi. Little Bird was kissed by fire, surely she would be alright. But he wasn’t sure about Shellron. He was afraid that she would be easily overtaken if they were caught. Detroit hoped that the girls would remember their training.
“Ok, when I give the signal you have 45 seconds to make it from the van to the door of the HBO studios. The doors will unlock and the camera will be facing towards the left. Make sure you slip by unnoticed.” Detroit was very clear. He wanted to make sure that they wouldn’t forget. Shengqi yanked open the door. Shellron and Little Bird got out of the van while Shengqi tossed them their backpacks. He climbed out last and went over the signal one more time with Detroit to make sure they were all on the same page. They tested the audio one more time to make sure that it was working properly as well. Then they waited. The wind was blowing and there was a light dusting of snow on the ground. They slipped on their backpacks right before Detroit flashed a blue light from within the van. He hoped they would see the signal. His friends began to run towards the building while he frantically entered codes and lines of text into his computer. He prayed that it would work. Beads of sweat dotted his brow while he worked. His heart was racing. “YES!” He exclaimed as the “access granted” code flashed on his screen. He looked over at the three shadows as they slipped in the door. He sighed deeply and prayed they would be able to complete their mission without getting caught. As Detroit began to slump in his seat to hide out he saw a flashlight. There was a guard walking across the parking lot twirling his keys nonchalantly. “Oh no. Oh seven hells no!” The guard was headed for the door…..
