Normally, I am the nice, calm, level-headed one here at angrygotfan.com but not today. Today, the Lady Shelly is AAANGRY!!!!!! I am absolutely infuriated at the changes that are being made to Dorne. Season 5 was supposed to be Dorne’s shining moment! We were supposed to get the strong and seductive Arianne! Ser Arys Oakheart, the brave and foolish knight of the Kingsguard! But nope. We’re getting Jaime and Bronn on a fantastic voyage and Sand Snakes with nipples on their armor!!!

While all of that makes me angry, I have become INFURIATED after reading an article from the garbage site WiC Net regarding Ellaria Sand. Indira Varma, the actress that portrays Ellaria Sand, the beloved paramour of the now deceased Oberyn Martell, gave an interview in The Independent magazine and I was truly and utterly shocked by some of the quotes from Varma in the interview.

“If you’ve seen season four, you know why I’m back,” begins Varma. “We go to Dorne…” she breaks off, unsure of how much she’s actually allowed to say. “Basically, you meet some of her clan and s*** happens! I’ve got three hot, hot daughters.”

UH NO. Nooo!! No you don’t! You have 4 daughters and they are CHILDREN. Once Ellaria is back in Dorne, she wants NO part of any revenge for Oberyn’s death. In fact, she has one of the best, most impassioned speeches in A Dance With Dragons:

Ellaria Sand

“Oberyn wanted vengeance for Elia. Now the three of you want vengeance for him. I have four daughters, I remind you. Your sisters. My Elia is fourteen, almost a woman. Obella is twelve, on the brink of maidenhood. They worship you, as Dorea and Loreza worship them. If you should die, must Elia and Obella seek vengeance for you, then Dorea and Loreza for them? Is that how it goes, round and round forever? I ask again, where does it end? I saw your father die. Here is his killer. Can I take a skull to bed with me, to give me comfort in the night? Will it make me laugh, write me songs, care for me when I am old and sick?

Making Ellaria a vengeful and bitter woman completely changes her character. For ONCE-ONCE there is a character that just wants peace. Ellaria is first and foremost a mother. A caring, nurturing, protective mother. There is strength in being a caring compassionate woman and the showrunners are replacing that strength with rage and vengeance! It’s just like they are doing with Sansa!!!! Every time a woman shows some sort of compassion or kindness, they want to twist it into some “YEEAAAAHHHH BROOOO!!!!!” moment for entertainment. It is completely possible to be a strong woman without resorting to violent methods! I guarantee you that viewers would appreciate the character of Ellaria just as she is in the books!!!! Why not show how a woman can be strong WITHOUT making her a murderous rage machine????

This isn’t some Arya moment here everyone. Ellaria doesn’t have a list. She doesn’t WANT revenge. So going back to Dorne isn’t about avenging Oberyn. Going back to Dorne is trying to live her life with her children and keep them safe while honoring the memory of their father. Yeah, I know that changes are going to be made to the show, sure. But this change makes a beautiful and serene character into another wannabe vigilante. We have enough of that, don’t we?

The whole point of Dorne is to show a different side of Westeros. One where females are treated as equals. One where bastards are regarded in the same way as true-born children. Yet for some reason, this place has become a mockery of what it should be. Everything good about Dorne has been changed and that all started with the omission of Arianne Martell. Maybe it even started with the changes made to Oberyn Martell. All I know is that D&D had a really good opportunity to atone for some of the gratuitious sex and rape and violence that we have been forced to endure for 4 seasons. It was a shining moment to show how WOMEN can be just as strong as men. Why isnt having compassion and the sense to know when enough is enough just as cool and entertaining as having a list and a Needle? Why can’t a woman be a gentle and kind and strong? Why can’t we just have the Ellaria Sand that we deserve?

Really sad. Let’s remember they did the same turn-into-crazy-woman to Ygritte.

  2. […] might be revenge for last season Although it was not in the books […]

I wouldn’t have a problem with the lack of Arianne if Ellaria hadn’t been so dead set on violence. If she had come to Doran and said she wanted to crown Marcella I’d be okay with the change of character. Arianne’s motives were selfish and full of revenge but not violent.

  4. Pat says:

There’s just no pleasing some people. If she was all about peace in the show, people would be complaining about how “weak” she was and sayin things like “why can’t this woman be tough? Just cuz she’s a woman she can’t want revenge”? So much whining about everything…
