  1. Detractor Legionare #230,745 says:

You’re adorable complaining about filler while defending Feast and Dance, the two most overly filler-padded, bloated, slowly moving, turgid books in existence.

    • Nigel Overstreet says:

It looks like Detractor has been doing too much reading of online comments and not enough reading of the actual books.
Feat & Dance are a Second Act of a greater whole, so they seem slower paced, but there isn’t anything in there which doesn’t add to the world and experience. Everything which is there is there for a reason, even if, at first glance, you don’t see that reason because you’re too twitchy to want to get to the end.

The show filler, on the other hand, adds nothing but providing beats. But the beats are so choppy, sporadic inconsistent that it’s hard for a character to keep a flowing arc. It’s why so many of the character motivations make no sense. Because, in each scene, the characters have to fulfil a specific purpose for the narrative, even if that character isn’t right for that purpose.
One day Jon is broken and lonely, the next he’s BAMF Lord Commander. One day he’s telling stories about the history of Westeros, the next he’s asking questions like he’s never read a book.

The show loses so much in trying to create “moments” that it loses its overall narrative. Whereas the books keep their narrative thread, even though they demand patience from the reader.

  2. phantomlimb says:

it’s going to be awesome when Jamie goes to Dorne, admits he’s the father of the Lannister children, then says “Myrcella, listen to your father, you’re marrying Bronn. He’s taking you to Casterly Rock. Right now”
And then Bronn’s like “Wjhaaaaaat?” and then Jamie goes “I promised you a better castle and a better wife. Go”

  3. phantomlimb says:

It’s also awesome that Dany is crazy and that while everyone is getting hung up on how inconsistent her ideas about justice are, they all come into perfect alignment when you realize that she never gave a damn about justice, she only cares about ruling. When you rule, you don’t want some Unsullied prick to take away your ability to mete out justice however you wish.

  4. Bo Donovan says:

    Well said!!!

  5. Why hasn’t Tyrion asked Jorah where whores go?

  6. jenni4955 says:

Jeez…so much filler. Personally, I love ADWD. It’s my favourite book out of the lot of them. So much rich detail, especially from Tyrion’s experiences in Essos that I felt as if I was there with him. But my favourite scenes took place in Winterfell with Abel and his washerwomen, Barbrey Dustin taking Theon down to the crypts and telling him stuff, Wyman Manderly and the Freys getting down and dirty and the Boltons just losing control of the entire situation there. But the absolute BEST was the scene with Theon at the weirwood tree when ‘it’ speaks to him. Sent chills up & down my spine. That sort of atmosphere and depth cannot come from a rushed TV show but only from an incredibly awesome BOOK.

  7. Elba says:

Totally agree on the Theon at the Weirwood tree scene! One of my favorites. But everything in the North was great in the books.
