STAR WARS AFTERMATH REVIEW – GREAT WRITING CLUNKY PLOT

THANKS AGAIN TO THE FOLKS AT DEL RAY AND PENGUIN USA FOR THE ADVANCE COPY OF STAR WARS AFTERMATH! ALSO THANKS TO CHUCK WENDIG FOR WRITING THIS NEW ADDITION THE STAR WARS “DISNEY CANON.”

THE GOOD: OVERALL WHAT AFTERMATH EXCELLED AT HAD ACTUALLY NOTHING TO DO WITH STAR WARS AT ALL! IT WAS THE FABULOUS WRITING STYLE OF CHUCK WENDING. KEEPING EVERYTHING IN PRESENT TENSE IS A LITTLE JARRING AT FIRST BUT THAT IS ONLY BECAUSE IT IS SO NEW AND SO DIFFERENT. MR WENDIG HAS AN EXCELLENT GRASP OF USING SHORT STACCATO PHRASES TO TRANSMIT MEANING AND NUANCE TO THE READER BENDING THE LAWS OF GRAMMAR – CHUCK WENDIG IS A JEDI MASTER OF THE WRITTEN WORD.

THE BAD: THE BOOK CONSTANTLY JUMPS FROM INTERCONNECTED PLOTLINE TO INTERCONNECT PLOTLINE AND THAT ALONE MADE THE PLOT A CLUNKER AND REALLY HARD TO KEEP READING AT A STEADY PACE. EVERY 3-4 PAGES THERE IS A NEW CHAPTER WITH A NEW MAIN CHARACTER AND A NEW LOCATION OFTEN BARELY EVEN CONNECTED TO THE OTHERS AND THE PLOT HAVING LITTLE TO DO AT ALL WITH THE OVERALL NARRATIVE. A LOT OF THIS IS THE FUNCTION OF DISNEY USING THIS NOVEL AS A MEANS OF FAN SERVICE TO “CHECK IN” ON A LOT OF THE FAVORITE CHARACTERS OF THE FAN BASE. AND THAT IS A HUGE STUMBLING BLOCK TO THE PLOT. A

THE JABBA:  GALAXY OF REFERENCES FROM THE DEEP DEPTHS OF STAR WARS’ RECESSES ARE NOT FUN REMINDERS OF THE OTHER CHAPTERS IN THE SAGA BUT INSTEAD STAND OUT AS BIG FLASHING POP UP ADS SCREAMING “WATCH STAR WARS REBELS!!!!” ADDITIONALLY, DESPITE ITS LENGTH, THIS IS CLEARLY A YOUNG ADULT NOVEL, THE PLOT AND CHARACTERS ARE NOT WRITTEN FOR AN ADULT AUDIENCE, WHICH IS FINE, BUT CALL IT FOR WHAT IT IS.

OUTLOOK: CHUCK! YOU CAME UP WITH SOME GREAT NEW CHARACTERS! DONT LET DISNEY TELL YOU WHAT TO DO SO MUCH! GIVE US TIME TO MEET YOUR PEOPLE TO CARE ABOUT THEM AND SHOW US THEIR HOPES AND DREAMS AND STRUGGLES. LESS REFERENCES TO THE CARTOONS — MORE STORY!
